Capitalizing on the Poker Boom
by: Lou Krieger©
There's a poker boom on right now that shouldn't come as a
surprise to anyone who plays regularly. It began when the World
Poker Tour started televising tournaments that allowed viewers to
see each player's hole cards - something the tournament
competitors couldn't do - and the crowning touch occurred when
Chris Moneymaker parlayed a $40 entry fee to an online
tournament into a $2.5 million victory at the World Series of Poker.
Poker and Zen
by Howard Lederer
Tournament poker can be very exciting, but like many exciting
things in life, it can also be terrifying. There is nothing quite like the
thrill of playing at a big money final table. I am often asked how I
handle the pressure of playing for such big money. I could give the
standard answer of "You have to forget the money and just think
about the chips as units." This is certainly true. But, those units are
worth a lot of money and forgetting about the money and prestige
that comes with winning is easier said than done.
A Tournament Tip
By Bob Ciaffone
A key concept of tournament play is the idea that a hand has a
"point of no return," where the player has committed such a large
portion of his chips that he should simply close his eyes, commit the
remainder of his chips to the pot, and hope for the best. Although
this is a general concept of poker, it arises far more often in the
setting of tournament play than in money-game play, because it is
there the blinds and bets can easily be a large portion of your total
chips, so I speak of it as primarily as a tip for tournament players.
New Study Tool
By Daniel Negreanu
If you wanted to work on your poker game, there are several ways
you could do so. You could start by reading David Sklansky's poker
textbooks and learning the fundamentals. You then could practice
what you've learned by using Wilson software, which simulates
live-game play. From there, you could pick up Mike Caro's Poker
Probe and run all kinds of simulations yourself. Even after you have
done all of that, there is still more you could do to improve your
game. You could visit online newsgroups like RGP, 2+2, and the
United Poker Forum. All are good sources for poker information.
"Gresham's Law"
By Michael Wiesenberg
Gresham's Law has some bearing on the current California poker
situation.According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the
English Language, Gresham's Law, a principle of economics, is "the
theory that if two kinds of money in circulation have the same
denominational value but different intrinsic values, the money with
higher intrinsic value ... will be hoarded and eventually driven out of
circulation by the money with lesser intrinsic value
... [Expounded by Sir Thomas Gresham (1519? - 1579), English
financier.]"
Ace Speaks - Playing the player
by Rolf Slotboom
Most poker literature is aimed at limit play, how to play a specific
hand in a specific situation. In pot-limit, it is not so much the hand
you play that is important- it is much more how you play the hand
from the flop onward (note the difference). Because in limit a large
percentage of the pots ends in a showdown, you will simply need a
good starting hand to have a decent chance to win. In pot-limit, this
is not necessarily the case. For a lot of good pot-limit players it is
often more important who they are up against than the hand they
are holding. To be more specific: in pot-limit, good players can
often win against weak, predictable players almost irrespective of
their own hand, and they try to do everything they can to get
involved with these players as often as possible
