Poker Glossary

All-In
When a player bets all of his chips.

Bad Beat
This is a common term for when you
have a really good
hand and are beaten by a better hand.

Bet The Pot
To make a bet that is the size of the pot.

Big Blind
The forced bet that is made by the
person sitting two seats to the left of the
button. In World Poker Tour tournament
play this amount increases after each
timed round.

Big Slick
Poker slang for A, K; a very good starting
hand.

Board
The community cards in flop games.

Button
A disc that signifies who is the nominated
dealer for this hand. The button moves
clockwise (to the left), each hand.

Call
To match, rather then raise the current
bet.

Check
If no other bets have been made, you
can check (pass), and wait to see if
anyone else will bet. If everyone checks,
then play moves to the next round.

Dead Man’s Hand
A pair of Aces and a pair of 8’s; Wild Bill
Hickock was shot holding this hand.

Dealer
The player nominated to be the dealer
for each hand, he doesn't actually deal,
but is the last one to bet, so it can be
advantageous.

Fish
The weakest player on the table, the one
who loses the most money.The famous
saying is: " If you look around the table
for the "Fish" and you can't find him, it's
you.”

Flop
The first three community cards in
Hold'Em or Omaha.

Fold
To throw your cards away, i.e. to decide
your hand is not worth playing anymore.

Gutshot Straight
Four cards of a straight with a card in the
middle missing. (ex: If you have a 9 and
an 8 and the flop contains a 7, then you
need a 6 in the turn or river. If a 6
comes, then you have made the gut shot
straight draw.)
Hole cards
The first two cards dealt face down to
you, also known as "pocket cards" in
Hold'Em.

Kicker
The highest card in a player’s hand that
isn’t being used in some other way (ie.
Three of a kind, a pair).

Monster
A hand that has a high probability of
winning.

Mucked cards
To throw your cards in without showing
them to anyone.

Nuts
The best possible hand in any one
game. A hand that can not be beat, and
should be bet aggressively.

Outs
Cards that are still in the deck that could
you’re your hand.

Pocket cards
Same as Hole Cards.

Position
Where the player sits in relation to the
dealer, which determines his or her
betting order.

Pot
The total of all the chips in the centre of
the table, this is what we are all playing
for.

Rake
The money removed from each pot by
the house, as a commission.

Raise, Re-Raise
A bet that will increase the level of the
current bet.

River
Also known as 5th Street, the last
community card in a flop game, also
refers to the last card in 7 card stud.

Rounds of betting
A round of betting is complete when all
players have had the opportunity to
either fold, call or raise.

Short Stack
The player with the fewest chips at the
table.

Small Blind
Refer to Big Blind.

Turn
Also known as 4th Street; The fourth
community card in flop games
