Poker Tournaments

Tournaments are a competitive and fun way to play poker. Because the buy-
in is always a fixed amount of money every player knows exactly how much
they will loose (except in re-buy tournaments) . For a small investment any
player can win a large sum of money, since the prize for a first place can be
very high compared to how much a player has risked and you don’t have to
be an expert player to win a tournament. Chris Moneymaker had never
played a live tournament before entering the WSOP in 2003.

There are several types of poker tournaments:

Elimination Tournaments
All players start out with an equal amount of chips and, as the tournament
progresses, the stakes are  raised. The amount of chips players begin with,
the stakes and the time periods determine whether it is a fast or slow
tournament. Play continues until one player has accumulated all the chips.
As players are eliminated, the active players are re-seated at fewer and
fewer tables. The winner of the tournament is the player who accumulates
all the chips. The pay out structure depends on the tournament, but usually
there is a prize for approximately every ten playersThe payout structure
rewards several players. For example, if a hundred players start a
tournament, commonly the "final table" of ten players would all receive prize
money.

Rebuy Tournaments
For an initial period of time players who lose all their chips are allowed to
"rebuy" more chips and continue to play. Rebuy tournaments generally
feature more aggressive play earlier on as players do not face the prospect
of elimination if they lose all their chips. Rebuys often lead to larger total
prize pools being played for than would be standard for the initial entry cost.

Shootout tournaments
Tables are not combined as players are eliminated. Each table plays down
to a single winner. The winner of each table proceeds to the  finals portion
of the event competing  elimination style until there is a winner. Shootout
tournaments normally last several hours less than regular elimination
events.

Online  tournaments
Online poker tournaments are a good  way to practice and improve  poker
tournament skills. There are numerous tournaments running twenty four
hours a day, seven days of the week. A player can easily play what would
have been 10 years of live tournament practice in one year, making online
poker a usefull tool for improving ones skills. A player also gets to practice
against players from around the world and therefore against many different
styles of play, leading to a much larger variety of weapons in the arsenal.
There are all kinds of possible structures and buy-ins.. The most popular
form of tournament poker is No Limit Texas Hold’em. (Online Tournaments)
