Roulette
Roulette is a simple game to play. Like blackjack, it is one of the most popular in online
casinos. One of the main attractions of roulette, both fo rvisitors of online casinos as well as
physical locations, is the Roulette table that is an integral part of the game. Often adorned
with flashing lights, graphics and sound features, the table an add an element of excitement
and fun to the game.

At one end of a roulette table is placed the large horizontal roulette wheel, hollowed in the
middle. In the hollow are small pockets, numbered from zero to thirty-six and coloured red or
black (the American version also has a double zero “00” pocket). As the roulette wheel spins,
a small ball (traditionally ivory or metal) is spun in the opposite direction from the wheel.
Once the wheel stops, the ball will rest in one of the numbered pockets, determining the
winning number and colour.

Gamblers attempt to predict the slot the ball will come to rest in, by betting either on a specific
number or a colour. Since the ball and the wheel travel in opposite directions, it is virtually
impossible to control the result of the outcome (although gambling lore is full of stories of
gamblers –and casinos - attempts to rig the outcome by surreptitious means).

Roulette has a variety of different betting options, and payoffs vary according to the type of bet
and the difficulty in winning. The easiest type of bet is of course to pick one number, but is
also the hardest to hit and pays odds of 35 to 1. (Here is where the advantage of double zero
is obvious. Using “00” on a roulette table means there are a total of 37 possible numbers, but
winning odds are at best 35 to 1. This gives the house an advantage of 5.26% as opposed to
European single zero tables advantage of 2.7%)
